How I Work

I’m Jack!

I’m a theater director based in New York City.

I am hyper-collaborative and new-work-oriented, with my methodology grounded in the Stanislavski System, while maintaining an overwhelming eagerness for the untested and unafraid. I want new work happening everywhere all the time, and I want people who don’t usually watch plays to see them.

I believe in work that insists on the virtue of humanity in increasingly dehumanizing times. My directorial vision and concepts are guided by one of my favorite quotes from playwright Lorraine Hansbury:

“I believe that one of the most sound ideas in dramatic writing is that in order to create something universal, you must pay very great attention to the specific."

The work of the director, I believe, is the work of articulation. To isolate the tiniest specifics: the gentlest breeze, lone cars passing in the distance, the smell of old furniture, the actor’s sensory imagination isunlocked, and the play can begin: lived in, honest, and universal, ready to be received by the audience.

My past projects have been produced at The Tank NYC, The Brick Aux, The Chain Theater, The Rat, The Old Globe Theater, The North Hollywood Actors’ Studio, The Goldberg Theater, and overseas at The Bush Theater in London, among others.
